Natural Musk: A Complete Guide to the Most Tenacious Base Note
Natural musk is one of the oldest and most valuable aromatic materials in oriental perfumery, known for its unique ability to give a fragrance warmth, depth and longevity that lasts for hours. In this guide we explore what gives natural musk its standing and how to use and care for it.
What is natural musk?
Natural musk is an aromatic material valued for its warm, softly animalic note that acts as a foundation for many compositions. It features high concentration and the ability to cling to the skin, making it ideal for adding to oils and blends to extend a fragrance's life.
Musk has been used in perfumery for centuries and keeps its place because it lends a composition a sense of warmth and closeness without being loud.
Key benefits
- A warm, sensual base note with exceptional longevity.
- Adds depth and smoothness to oils and blends.
- Helps fix lighter notes and extend their trail.
- Suitable for solo use or within a complete composition.
How to use it
Natural musk can be worn alone on pulse points for a warm, skin-close scent, or blended with oud and aromatic oils to build a personal composition. A tiny amount goes a long way, so start small and increase as desired.
When combined with lighter notes, musk acts as a bridge that unites the layers and gives them greater flow and longevity.
Care and storage
Store natural musk in a sealed container away from heat, humidity and direct light, and keep it apart from strongly scented materials to preserve the purity of its note and extend its life.
Who it suits
Natural musk suits lovers of warm, long-lasting scents, those who enjoy building their own fragrance compositions, and anyone who regularly works with oud and oriental oils.
